Abstract
Seafood is an important source of protein, minerals and essential vitamins to human. This study is aimed at the microbiological evaluation of crude oil and non-crude oil contaminated seafood from Bayelsa State. Seafood such as periwinkle, prawn and clams were all harvested from crude oil and non-crude oil contaminated environment. Standard microbiological analysis for total heterotrophic bacteria were determined. Gram staining, biochemical identification, and Antibiotics susceptibility test were determined. Total heterotroph bacteria count ranged from 7.13 to 8.42 log10cfu/g, Staphylococcal count ranged from 5.48 to 6.86 log10cfu/g, Salmonella count ranged from 6.30 to 6.74 log10cfu/g, Coliform count ranged from 4.90 to 6.61 log10cfu/g, Vibrio ranged from 4.70 to 6.07 log10cfu/g, E. coli ranged from 5.48 to 6.18 log10cfu/g and Shigella ranged 5.30 to 6.04 log10cfu/g. The result showed that the non-crude oil contaminated seafood had the highest total heterotrophic bacteria, Staphylococcal, Salmonella, Vibrio and E. coli count than in the crude oil contaminated seafood. The antibiotics susceptibility test revealed that Bacillus spp. and Staphylococcus spp. both have a multiple drug resistance index of 0.33 and Levofloxacin (5 µg) Ciprofloxacin (5µg), Ofloxacin (5µg), Erythromycin (5µg) and Azithromycin(15µg) are the most effective against Gram’s-positive organisms with 100 % susceptibility. While Vibrio spp. and Shigella spp showed the highest resistant rate to all the Gram-negative antibiotics. Ofloxacin (5µg) and Levofloxacin (5µg) are effective against the bacteria isolates both having 100 % susceptibility. Seafood harbors pathogenic microorganisms which could cause disease to human if consumed in raw or partially cooked form. Therefore, quality attention and food safety should be placed on seafood.
